Valuing the landscape, its products and its people”
Sustaining farm and rural livelihoods in and around the Cumbrian Uplands
Derwent Charcoal and Tree Services is a tree surgery business based in Keswick. As well as tree surgery and producing lump wood charcoal they also carry out conservation and environmental work for local authorities, private and commercial customers.
Through the Cumbria Fells and Dales RDPE local Action Group, Derwent Charcoal and Tree Services of Keswick has received a grant of £8,000.
This has enabled owner Julian Grave to invest in new market opportunities. The tracked chipper allows Julian to get into woodland that requires thinning, felling and re-planting plus areas that are narrow, steep or muddy. The machine also allows extraction of timber from woodlands with minimal damage to the area. This timber is turned into charcoal, chippings or firewood, which is also part of the business operation.
The project has been developed using the Leader method and has resulted in £12,000 of private investment.
