Valuing the landscape, its products and its people”
Sustaining farm and rural livelihoods in and around the Cumbrian Uplands

Boot Leisure Ltd develops leisure businesses and currently owns Stanley House Bed and Breakfast in Eskdale and is in the process of building up a portfolio of seven "green" leisure establishments. The Stanley House B&B was a Christian Housing Association building which has been developed into twelve ensuite bedrooms finished to a high standard and with 4 to 5 star equivalent facilities. The business has been developed with an ecological focus, and has already achieved a Cumbria Business Environment Network bronze award and is working towards a silver award.
This project is for the purchase of a firewood processor to facilitate the production of firewood for a new wood fired boiler system installed at Stanley House B&B. The building is on four floors and the new log burning boiler system will burn in the region of 300 tonnes of wood per year. This wood will be sourced from neighbouring Dalegarth Woods, a plantation which comprises 150 acres of soft and hardwood; the wood is privately owned and under a 30 year management plan.
The installation of the boiler was contributing to the ongoing viability of the business with the intention to reduce oil use to no more than 1,000 litres, with the wood burning system will provide 92% of the heat and hot water required by the business.
One of the results from this project was the benefit to the local village primary school in Eskdale Green . As Boot Leisure Ltd is now processing the logs that they need for their biomass boiler; this was agreed as part of the grant that we received for the purchase of the firewood processor.
Thanks goes to the few companies involved in these works who each in turn played a major role in building and commissioning the boiler. All showed dedication and enthusiasm in something that is relatively new in this country, but should hopefully become more widespread.
