APRIL'S FEATURE: PROJECTS BEYOND THE FELLS AND DALES

There are only so many mouths in Cumbria (about 500,000) and although over 16million visitor days also consume a fair amount of produce, businesses and promotional groups are looking outside Cumbria. Peter Gott, Andrew Sharp and Les Salisbury all go down to London to Borough Market already. The organic group and a few other producers visit markets in Lancashire and Manchester. Recently LEADER+ has supported two projects looking to take more Cumbrian produce beyond the boundary.

Culinary Cumbria
This is a Made in Cumbria Ltd hosted project. They aim to put local produce in front of a greater number of potential customers by creating a mobile 'shop', publicising it and using it to sell local produce at small events both in and outside Cumbria. As a result local producers will have more outlets without having to expend resources to attend what might be considered as events too small to be economic for the individual producer. This will create opportunities to:

  • Access new markets for producers - new events, events outside of Cumbria, new types of events such as sport events.
  • Test market the suitability of these events for producers to attend in their own right.
  • This project will be able to highlight which products would be most suitable.
  • Provide a new market for food related craft items such as recipe cards, tableware, chopping boards etc.
  • Develop mail order and internet sales.
  • Promote local and regional food.

This project will determine the viability of using a mobile promotional unit, which type of events which are most successful and the possibility of developing a bespoke show unit.

The Cumbrian Sausage
A pair of young entrepreneurs are creating a supply chain between Cumbrian producers and various small outlets in London. They are targeting small delicatessens and specialist shops with a range of chilled, fresh and longer shelf life produce. They make weekly runs up and down the motorway network to ensure produce is delivered at optimum condition for the weekend trade. They are always trying to expand their range and have a website www.thecumbriansausage.co.uk. Their next move will certainly be to start delivering elsewhere - so watch this space.
