Cumbria Fells and Dales LEADER

LEADER 2014-2020 Programme

The Cumbria Fells & Dales Local Action Group (LAG) has produced its 2014-2020 Local Development Strategy.  This sets out the economic needs and aspirations for the rural areas of the LAG area and was agreed through extensive consultation with local businesses, rural networks, voluntary and community groups and public bodies. It also outlines proposals for spending a £3.008 million allocation of Rural Development Programme funds using the LEADER approach.

The LEADER approach uses local knowledge to promote integrated ‘bottom-up’, community led delivery of Rural Development Programme funding.  Its aim is to support farming, forestry, rural communities and enterprises to grow and strengthen, encouraging innovation and co-operation in order to tackle local development objectives.

Our priorities for funding in this programme are to:
 • Invest in the small and micro businesses of Cumbria to create growth, jobs and opportunities for growth in the period 2015-2020, whilst retaining natural and social capital;
 • Invest in particularly important economic sectors for CFD, farming (especially in the hills), forestry, (especially in active woodland management and wood-fuel) and tourism (to encourage new visitors and visitor experiences);
 • To support the rural services that sustain the social, cultural fabric and heritage of this environmentally important area.
