The Queens Head in Tirril is the original home of the
Tirril Brewery. The photograph, taken in October 2005, shows
the manager pulling a pint of Old Faithful. This beer, one
of five, is named after Charles Gough's dog. In 1805 it
guarded its master's remains for three months after he had
fallen from Helvellyn.
Brewing started at the Queen's Head in 1999. It outgrew
the premises there and moved to Brougham Hall in 2002, occupying
rooms that had housed a brewery in 1823. It has now outgrown
Brougham Hall and is relocating to new premises, probably
in summer 2006.
